Chris surprised Josh and I with a trip to the North Shore last week. We stayed at Canal Park Lodge, a beautiful hotel! We checked in late Thursday night, and the clerk upgraded us to a room facing the lake instead of the city. In search of a snack, we walked around Canal Park and settled for Old Chicago (the only place open). Afterwards, we saw the barriers down on the bridge, meaning a ship was going through the canal. Chris carried Josh and ran the 3 blocks, getting there in time to see the Cason J. Callaway come in. The bridge didn't come down and just as we were wondering if it was broken, the Presque Isle came in. By then, it was almost midnight and we were all tired! We woke up to waves on the beach beyond the boardwalk and a ship coming in. Somehow the three of us managed to get showered and changed and were at the canal before the St. Clair came through. I know, we are such tourists! But whenever we've been there, we've been lucky to see one boat come through. To see 3, plus a couple more on the lake later that day, just made the trip extra special!
After a late breakfast on the hotel patio, we hung out in the room. Chris took a nap (he had gotten up to take pictures of the sunrise) while Josh and I drew pictures to send to the grandparents. Then we checked out and headed farther up the shore. I highly recommend Kendall's Smoked Fish House in Knife River (if you like smoked fish). The salmon and trout are especially good. If you're looking for a great beach to watch the waves on the rocks and skip stones, check out Stony Point Beach. Just keep an eye on the water! Josh and I were attacked by an evil wave. Luckily our suitcases were in the car, so we were able to find something dry to wear! We were cold though, so we headed to Betty's Pies for a late lunch and some pie and coffee. We drove north as far as Castle Danger, then turned around and headed back to the Cities, in time to show up at a welcome back party for Livia (my brother-in-law's sister).
